Dancing and Stealing Caught on Camera

This sequence is shocking. I was standing on Broadway last week in NYC. A street group started a show, jumping and dancing. Guys were good and soon a huge crowd was all around them.
I took my webcam and filmed from an angle where supposedly one could see dancers. But instead I was the witness of pickpockets. While few guys are dancing, singing and jumping, few accomplices are going through the crowd to embezzled phones, cameras and wallets.

Facebook will be #1 this year before Google

Few months ago I read reports of Facebook to surpass Google -maybe- by 2012 or 2013. My gutt feeling - it will happen in the next 120 days.

Imagine a community website taking leadership of the WWW - yet this is happening as you read those lines.
Facebook is growing fast +220% this year reaching 122M uniques in July. Google leads with 147M uniques BUT it is absolutely inevitable Facebook will win this battle.

Google is facing serious attacks from Microsoft with Bing.com. Yahoo! has remained solid behind Google despite the Ballmer/Chen fiasco. Google's numbers are stable but no real sign of growth despite a rise in search queries.

Facebook has doubled its uniques from 66M in January 09 to 122M in July 09 and I see a peak of uniques starting right after summer holidays. Millions of pictures are going to be posted to Facebook. There is one ironical fact: 1st source of incoming traffic on Facebook is....Google. Maybe Google will react to that and start pushing Facebook results a bit further down.

FaceBook will be #1 site in the world by December 09. INCREDIBLE.

You are so predictable

Few things continue to amaze me - or should I say amuse me when it comes down to human nature.
One of those things is predictability. Instinct takes over intelligence in most cases.
This is the difference between a chess player and a master. The ability to control emotion is often blurred by the need of vengeance. Action/reaction kind of theory.
I slap you – you strike back. Instantly. No second thoughts. Why?
Two reasons – 1st humiliation needs retaliation. NOW.
2nd your brain can’t think that fast.
Not so long ago I was engaged in a relationship where happy ending was not an option. Not only was it written danger all over it but blindness of the moment weakened my perception to the max.
Recovery is often judge by the capacity to think ahead in a cold-blooded manner.

Hopefully at 40+ I was able to resource myself surrounded by family and kids who cherish me with an incredible passion [THANK YOU].

It didn’t take too long before I initiated a series of behavioral experiences based on the same items that caused my fall. In a sick threesome relationship I was able to seed info and collect data – thank you Twitter. It was almost incredible to monitor demeanor and emotion of anger. Blinded by strong emotion and compulsive obsession my wannabe partner developed a transparent pattern of actions.
Anger became a motive to hate and defamation. It doesn’t matter who is right or wrong. I believe post relationship crisis management reveals a person.
During the course of my –very unreliable- study I found out there is a strong relationship between obsession and addictive behaviors.
Addicts are obsessed by nature. They need to kill the obsession to move pass the addiction. There is no cure without containing the obsessive anger.
This post is not a personal note or subliminal message to re-engage into a conversation with past acquaintances. It’s a testimony on how changing my behaviors and demeanor, really improved my relationships with others both professionally and personally.
You can go from predictable to changeable. Adding rationality to life is a great move.

Being a huge Law & Order fan I felt lucky seating next to "Fin" from NYC to FLL.
I've seen bunch of actors/actresses but few are NICE. Ice was shaking everyone's hand as we were seating upfront. At some point I felt sorry for the guy. Can you imagine 200 passengers shaking your hand?
He didn't blink and kept smiling.
Way to go Fin.

Skype Beta for BlackBerry

I just got my hands on Skype official Beta for BlackBerry Storm.
It looks more like an Alpha then a Beta. First the app is not OTA and not packaged JAD. There are 2 files a .COD and an .ALX.
Both files are available for download here: DOWNLOAD INSTALL AT YOUR OWN RISK.

Once loaded through BlackBerry Desktop Manager you can add the application on your BlackBerry. I have tested with a Storm 9530 Verizon.
The icon is slick. Typical Skype logo.
To run the application you must disable compatibility mode in Options-->Advanced Options-->Applications-->Skype-->Menu [disable Compatibility Mode].
Say no: press P when prompted for update.

To navigate through options after you launch the application use:
O or Q to accept
P to decline
Space to open
You can scroll through touch screen but do not click and simply press A to option field.
Signin is quick. Contacts load rapidly.
Chat works perfectly and calling a contact using your Skype credit is flawless.
I didn't succeed to call a phone number yet because keyboard mapping is obviously not Storm ready.

Update: I have also tested on Bold running 4.6 and it works much better.

You are now familiar with my regular cyber squatting on Pat’s blog.
Today 1 year after this post we are going to see if Twitter can be mainstream and still be interesting.
In last few weeks celebrities took over our favorite social medium. Not that it bothers me. Twitter is a democracy. My issue is mostly with the exchange everyone is asked to make in any society.
You cannot invite yourself to my table and not share or entertain conversation. Celebrities- as much as I hate the term- have massively polluted our tool engaging themselves in a race for followers.
Ashton Kutcher aka @aplusk is now self-declared King of Twitter. Oprah will rule on top of the pyramid in a couple of weeks and I’m an inch away to drop out. To better understand what is happening I have to throw some figures.
Boring - I know…but it makes my case.

@aplusk ‘friends’ grow at a rate of 770 followers per tweet

@oprah ‘friends’ add up at a rate of 33.000 followers per tweet. She has nearly half a million follower after 13 updates.

And we want to ignore something is broken?

I wanted to believe Twitter is all about CONVERSATION not COMPETITION. It survived spambots, porn, escorts, solicitation, gaming but not fame…if not stopped now the race will get nasty. @michaeljackson, @mariahcarey, @robertredford, @hannahmontana, who is next?
I couldn’t figure out numbers of tweets related to the stupid challenge @aplusk vs. @cnnbrk but I’m sure it captured over 50% of total stream.

There is a solution to avoid social hijacking. Very simple solution. Make stats private. No more public count of followers/following. It will make the Twitter community much ‘cleaner’ and bring everyone back to sharing.
Celebrities are welcome to bring good noise. They will certainly get a lot of attention but they will have to follow rules of social engagement.

Last night I threw the idea –I’m not claiming to be the 1st who thought about it btw- on Twitter thinking it will be ignored. To my surprise it has been massively re-tweetted.

Twitter: you need to listen – we do not want popularity, we want quality content.

Ironically Twitter founders have engaged themselves in a race against Facebook so I guess we have come full circle. After all they ‘only’ need 200 Ashton Kutcher to beat them.

Paul Walsh recommended the place but I had no idea it was going to be so fun. An amazing restaurant located in the heart of Soho where the table is the center of attraction.
Overhead are space-age projectors that turn your table into a sexy kind of Surface. The tablecloth becomes a touch-sensitive screen. You can scan a menu, or hail a cab, at the click of a button. You can even change the look of your table (clouds, bamboo, etc) - a bit like wallpaper on your computer. It took few minutes to figure out what we wanted and amazingly meals arrived promptly in our plates.
Animo has great food presentation. Minimalistic fusion food but portions are ok.
Black cod menu was tasty and so well presented you don't want to take a bite.
Looking good is easy but tasting great is something else. Inamo wins this challenge from top to bottom.

I was cleaning my bookmarks and came across this article posted on February 9th 2001. 8 years ago!! What can I say? It's so actual it is frightening. You can change few dates, add couple of words such as Web 2.0 and social networking, mention FaceBook and TechCrunch and you have a very good post for today.
Bottom line it gives me hope this whole recession can be behind us soon. People have short memory. We forget!

A year ago, big-time venture capitalists were such revered individuals that you expected some enterprising entrepreneur would put their faces and track records on trading cards. People like Ann Winblad of Hummer Winblad Venture Partners and John Doerr of Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers were on their way to achieving rock star status.

Then the technology bust of 2000 occurred and suddenly the watchwords became not "hot IPO" but "irrational exuberance." The VCs were suddenly not so VIP.

Yet at a recent Wharton conference entitled "Private Equity in the New Millennium," venture capitalists generally agreed that while things got a bit wild in the last year or two, the present and future can still be profitable. "Yes, times are different than they were three years ago, but they are also different than they were three months and even three days ago," said Jesse Reyes, managing director of Venture Economics, who reports on private equity performance in his company's Benchmark Reports. "The brand-new technology is not going to go away. Things will go in cycles."

Reyes said that he compares current conditions to those in the middle 1980s. In the early 1980s, a big wave of tech companies went public--Microsoft, Apple Computer, Compaq Computer, Lotus--with great fanfare and great gains.

"Then four or five years later, there was a giant hole," he said. "There were single-digit returns instead of the double-digits promised to investors in many companies, and the well of venture capital dried up considerably."

Reyes' statistics show that while the emphasis in the press seems to be on the slowdown in initial public offerings, of more significance is the fact that the median company received $27 million in venture capital in the fourth quarter of 2000; in the first quarter of 2001, it is getting only $15 million to $20 million.

Getting real
"The days of $25 million first-round funding are indeed gone," said Dan Roach, managing director of Garage.com, the Silicon Valley-based venture firm. "But the opportunities are still there. Good ideas continue to be funded and valuations will just be more realistic."

The theme of "We're still here for good ideas" was repeated over and over by the venture capitalists at the conference. "It certainly was an interesting time two years ago, quite heady," said Steve DesJardin, a partner in Encore Venture Partners. "But often good ideas came around, and there weren't enough good people to run them. Now we think it's a time of great opportunity if, and only if, you have a long-term, at least three-to-seven-year time line...You should be a builder, not a trader. Traders have cloaked themselves as VCs. But true VCs look to build companies. As a good VC, you are as much a part of the companies as the entrepreneurs."

Safeguard Scientifics, a publicly traded technology incubator and fund investor, has lost about 90 percent of its market value in recent months. But Garrett Melby, Safeguard's vice president of e-services, said the company was doing business much the same as it has in other business cycles. "We have prospered when the markets were favorable and built companies when they were not," said Melby. "While the opportunities for entrepreneurs and careers in venture capital are obviously not as strong as in the last two or three years, tech investing is still a great place to be.

"There may be fewer opportunities, but they will be attractive ones," he added. "The rates of return may not be as rapid, but the ideas that are being funded now have better long-term business plans, so in the long run, that is what will work."

Carter Sednaoui, CFO of Accel Partners, said his firm has of late avoided health care ventures, but, ironically, its health-care portfolio has contributed more than $26 million to Accel's bottom line, more than its tech portfolio. The company's success comes because "we are development drillers, not wildcatters," said Sednaoui. "It's been one hell of a party the last five years, but essentially, we haven't done anything different from the previous 15; it's just that everyone was more successful. Venture capital is an interesting business, but what the recent times prove is that you should not be attracted merely by the financial gratifications, but by the idea of building companies."

Robert Walsh, a general partner at Summit Partners, a late-stage growth investment firm, suggested that valuations across all industries won't be rising rapidly for a while and thus anyone thinking about becoming a venture capitalist had better be creative and do his or her research. "Everyone now has to think about being on the leading edge in ideas. IT (information technology) services, for instance, was big for us in 1997 through 1999, but not now. You have to be looking for the next thing, or someone will beat you to it...On the other hand, there is no short-term path, though it seemed that way to those who jumped in during the last couple of years. Your job is to help entrepreneurs build their dreams and so to build yours."

Some venture capitalists contend that now is actually a better time for the venture capitalist industry than two years ago. "The risk is out," said Fred Wilson, managing partner at Flatiron Partners, a New York venture firm. "Too many companies were being formed in one industry or another and values were too high. Now more bad companies, or at least bad valuations, are unlikely to occur. There may be fewer deals, but more will be good ones."

Intensive care
Venture capitalists should not be afraid to sunset companies that aren't going to make it in the long run, added Accel Partners' Sednaoui. "We actually have an intensive care unit at Accel. On Mondays, we discuss those companies in the ICU and see whether we can help them succeed...The point is to make money. Sometimes that means getting out."

But the real question is when to get in. And the venture capitalists at the conference agreed that there is no magic formula for that.

"How do you value a company? To tell you the truth, I have no idea," said Jason Sanders, general partner at Crosslink Capital. "I don't mean that to sound stupid. But it is more an art than a science. The problem is that if you are wrong, your investment can go down to zero, and if you are right, you can make a lot of money. It is an art not everyone can do."

Sam Baker, managing director of the private equity group at Pilgrim Baxter & Associates, agreed with the art versus science notion.

Pricing a venture deal is an art because "you are forecasting cash flow way out," he said. "You can jerk yourself around with an Excel spreadsheet, but (it's important) to keep in mind that you want to invest in companies and managements that will grow over time. This is not just about the next quarter."

Roach attributed much of his company's success to Garage.com's dynamic founder, Guy Kawasaki. "Guy is a shameless promoter of our portfolio companies," said Roach. "It's a California thing. You have to do that to make your money the best and the smartest. To be a successful venture capitalist, you have to be proactive. You hear the word 'network' a lot, but that is what it is all about.

"You have to build it into your psyche that you are always looking," Roach added. "The people who are most successful are extremely networked. They meet people at conferences, they send Christmas cards, they make notes. When it comes time to make that important phone call, that other person will say, 'Yes, I had lunch with that guy in June,' and that may seal the deal."

Most importantly, the venture capitalists told the audience, it is vital to know that you are doing business and not being sentimental. "You can be friendly and nice, but you want most to be commercially successful," said Mitchell J. Blutt, executive partner at J.P. Morgan Partners. "If you are commercially focused, the company you are funding will appreciate you because you have made your objectives clear. Then your friendliness isn't a mask."

And lifting that mask can be very important when you have something negative to say. "It's great to have everyone in the room feel good (about a deal)," said Baker, of Pilgrim Baxter." But the important thing is to have everything go right. Every good firm needs a bastard who sees through this feel-good thing and says, 'Wait a minute. We have only $5 million left, and there are some things we have to do'. That is the difference between a feel-good bad deal and one that works."

Twitter - wanna a few bucks

The web is full of articles based on how Twitter can make some monies.
Of course I don’t intent to give Twitter managers a lesson. They proved
it all already. Success is no luck.

Kevin Thau – Twitter new biz dev guy must be brainstorming day and night looking on how to generate revenue for our favorite social media network.

My analysis is mostly based on observation. Don’t blame me if some of
the figures are distorted. If you have them please come forward and
I’ll rectify.

They are about 100 Twitter clients, 200 Twitter services and certainly
a thousand of 3rd party apps or web apps posting to Twitter.

I cannot imagine one is launching a Twitter service for philanthropic
inspiration only. It’s all about the money. Money around a community of
users – or potentiality of revenues to be generated around this
community.

Twitter founders and managers must be frustrated to see everyone else
around raising money based on sending feeds or posts to their social
media network.

Who provides the vital information? Twitter!!

Latest example of TweetDeck raising half a million dollar delivering messages to a FREE online service left me to think.

How Twitter can monetize their business and still maintain a free service for end-user?

Ok – I admit I have been a bit busy this week so it took me a few minutes to figure it out…but here are my thoughts.

Twitter is a carrier i.e. identical to any broadcast media. We were all
thinking broadcast media = TV…here is the mistake. I’m thinking
Broadcast media as THE network. Twitter IS the network. TVs are the
clients - each one around a different service.

If you look at it this way you suppress direct revenue from advertising
- which is certainly not very sexy today -AND you may charge for
SERVICE per usage. Like a hosting company – basically Twitter hosts our
Tweets and make them available to Clients.

So now imagine a business model based on:

- Bandwidth aka Twitter API Usage 80req/hour or 100req/hour or 200req/hour

- Number or Tweets posted

Twitter should SELL API usage to all of those who want to access their
network. This is THE immediate revenue-generating model. Price should
be based on consumption, queries, awareness, and even revenue sharing
in some cases.

Give each APP the full XMPP feed from Twitter, everyone now has the exact same access.

Twitterrific is selling its application on Apple Store, generating revenue based on usage of a free API. It doesn’t sound right.

First this is taking traffic away from Twitter mobile web app [meaning no possible revenue from advertising if ever]

2nd it requires more constraint on API and therefore induce a cost for Twitter.

In this case Twitter would be much more a service provider with revenue generated by thousand of companies.

Leave others monetize their value added service. If one thinks
Twitterrific, Twhirl or TweetDeck bring a different user experience it
might justify the cost. Even help those application developers to sell
their apps.

Of course it will certainly lower number of Twitter apps available. But
we know some are ridiculously useless or repetitive and will not
survive. In any case API could remain FREE for usage <50req/hr.

There is one downside in all that – which I believe could become a great benefit…

What if the community of developers around Twitter decides to give up on Twitter?

Well I still think Twitter is strong thanks to its 2.7 million users
and NOTHING else. People will use more services directly offered by
Twitter: Web, mobile portal and text message…and maybe even their own
Twitter desktop application if they really wanted to!!

So here it is. It certainly needs to be tuned and brainstormed but general idea is set above.

Palm Pre - One I'll be waiting for

I think this video gives a nice overview of what Palm Pre will offer soon. I really feel this device has all it takes to become a major hit.
Palm is the inventor of electronic agendas. They failed to move from handled devices to smartphones mostly due to a lack of vision. But they have the capacity to counter strike.
Apple iPhone has definitely brought new targets in term of customer satisfaction and slowly competition is catching up.
It will take few months before we can see Pre on shelves. Sprint might be a big winner and I'm sure they gave a fat check to Palm for this product exclusivity.

Things I like about the Pre:

Fast processor
Real Keyboard
Wireless wall charger [excellent news for the industry]
Palm compatible 3rd party software
Flash [incredible when we know how Apple failed to include it on iPhone]

And I also like the fact Bono [U2] is a major investor in Palm. Makes the Pre looks more human - less techy :)

2008 - what will remain?

This post is mostly for my kids, grand kids and generation of Seroussi's to come. No one will ever forget 2008. Like I studied about 1776, 1929, 1939, 1945, 1974, 1979 and 2001, 2008 will be one of those dates. A year where world has changed.

Android on HTC Touch

If you happen to have an old Windows Mobile HTC you can install Android on it. It works like a charm as you can see on this video.
This install is a dual-boot WM and Android made possible by XDA-Developers.
I was very active on XDA forums 5 years ago but I lost interest in Windows Mobile machines after my first BlackBerry. But if we can have Android on those devices...I might give it a try.

This test is not really accurate for the following reasons:

- Original was an Avi converted in Mov via Quicktime
- HD was lost in the conversion.
- It was edited on iMovie and re-exported in mp4
- All shots in this video were taken on bright daylight behind a tinted windshield.
- Camera was not steady as I was holding it.
- Road was bumpy at some point which caused some distortions.

But overall it gives a good view of this tiny camcorder sold for $99 at Best Buy. It has a lot of potential and I will try to improve shooting and editing in next posts.

This year was a tough year for everyone and the only person who knew something was happening was Jeff Pulver. Back on December 27th last year, Jeff hosted a SoFla [South Florida] social media breakfast and his prediction for 2008 happened to be very accurate. Watch and see for yourself.

I was on the road most of the year traveling to France, Spain, Switzerland, London, Germany, Italy, Ireland, Monaco, Nice, Tel-Aviv, New York, San Francisco, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, Ottawa, Montreal, Bahamas, Arkansas, Boston, Houston, Seattle, Vancouver, and lots of other places I cannot name for confidentiality reasons.

I must admit this was fun. Pat Phelan had the bright idea to offer free iPhone unlocking and he ended up by bricking Mike Arrington - CEO TechCrunch - iPhone. Funny part is that I was holding the iPhone when Mike walks back. Pat's face that day was just incredible. Watch this video:

Less funny - I had to go to New York and it happened to be the day all markets crashed.

For most of my readers it sounds like a dream - it's not. Jet lags, long flights, security hassle, packing unpacking, huge temperature difference, short nights, getting into a 4 hour meeting after an overseas flight, kids too far away....all those things are not on those pictures...but they exist.

It's my choice. I don't complain. Let's see how 2009 will be...

3 must have add-on for your Mac

Like many others I moved to Mac about a year ago after 25 years of Windows era. It was not easy and I think Apple could convert more users with some minor changes. First obvious change is the mouse. Windows users like right/left clicks. But Apple has decided NOT to change their strategy. On the contrary they went to 0 click on their new Mac...Good for some Mac junkies but very bad if you need to convince more Windows users.
On a software level here are 3 plug-ins Apple should bundle in OS X. A must have for ex-Windows_ers.

Email notification. Native mail app on OSX does not give you any notification of new incoming emails. Unless you check you masked dock every 10 minutes or so - you might not see an important email coming in. I use Mail Appetizer. It's free and does the job amazingly well.
Quicksilver lets you start applications (and do just about everything) with a few quick taps of your fingers. I really wonder why a company full of cash like Apple would not take their checkbook out and buy this first-class must-have add-on!!
Wireless panel on OS X is very basic. Too simple for most Windows users. We like to tweak and here we basically have 2 choices. Turn Radio on or off. Well try Air Radar. It has it all. Perfect to find a good hotspot while on the move.

By the way. Those 3 plug-in are 100% FREE and only ask for voluntary donations. We need to support them. Even $1 can help.
I could have listed many other apps/addons but those are so basic for me I wanted to keep the list short and relevant.
If you have some good tips about things I missed - please feel free to educate me :) I'm a new Mac user.

I know a lot of moms didn't like the idea of this commercial but I really don't see anything wrong with the ad.
In my opinion we only hear moms that didn't like it - so I assume all the other ones were not opposed to it. That makes a lot of moms and Motrin should not have pulled it off.
What about dads and back pain?? Motrin you should make the same commercial with dads instead of moms. Men are usually more open moms than most moms :)
As often Loren Feldman made some good points in this videocast. Not exactly vocabulary I'd be using on my blog but his analysis is valid!
I hope this will not stop Motrin from trying to be innovative in their ads.

BlackBerry Storm - I want one!!

I love my iPhone but i'm not using it. For many reasons - 1) no push email not just Yahoo! - anyway who uses a yahoo! email for business?? 2) battery...OMG this is really bad on the iPhone + no additional batteries 3) keyboard. I can't type with one hand like on my Bold 4) flaws and upgrade on the iPhone are legend. Can someone tell many how many firmware update we went thru with Apple in 1 year??

BlackBerry is coming out with Storm- a killer device to be launched maybe as early as November by Verizon. Very bad news for ATT who is to release the Bold in the next days. RIM should be very careful not fooling around with carriers. US is not Canada. We have competition down here Mr BlackBerry - watch out!!

iPhone did boost creativity from phone manufacturers. Finally our devices are becoming smarter, lighter, sexier and affordable. I remember the old days when a Sony Ericsson P800 was around 1000 euros...BlackBerry is among first to fight back, Nokia should launch their 'Tube' early October and HTC Dream G1 publicly available by October 22nd.

Anyway I want a Storm although it doesn't solve the keyboard problem. But I'll get my Storm like I got the Bold and the iPhone. Part of the geek syndrome. So far best device I had was BB 8320. Not perfect but a solid 90/100.

Mac is cool and PC is stupid is finally over. Microsoft has intelligently responded to Apple in one of best ad ever. Simple. Nothing technical. HUMANS. Yes PC users may have glasses - so what Mr Jobs??!!

I think Microsoft has changed, obviously competition is driving the economy forward and Apple vs. Microsoft proves it again.

In the ad below, you will notice Eva Longoria, her husband, basketball star Tony Parker, musical artist Pharrell Williams and Bill Gates among a crowd of ordinary people. A must see.

I just spent a week in San Francisco for 2 events. TechCrunch 50 and CTIA Wireless Entertainment.

TechCrunch is an excellent start for entrepreneurs looking to test-drive their product or services. You must be fully ready to participate to the event. Some came with almost nothing and will certainly end up by folding their project very soon. But some others were really good at it.

Among my winners and interesting companies - no special order of preference:

Producteev - Social Project Management
PeopleBrowsr - Social network aggregator in a web app
Swype - new predictive touch key solution on tiny screen
TrueCar - change the way cars are being sold
Zong- mobile payment system enabling web publishers to bill
Popego - another web social platform.

Lots of people were complaining – including Robert Scoble – about poor execution of companies presenting at TechCrunch. I don’t think TechCrunch is to blame. The market is just saturated of low-ball ideas with lousy execution. I think TechCrunch took what was out there. I wonder how many ‘bad’ projects were submitted :)

The worst on stage was IMINDI. How did they make it to the stage? What happened there? I can’t believe Mike and Jason were reviewing this!

Anyway the event was a great opportunity to meet friends, colleagues and entrepreneurs – no preference in order of appearance:

I wanted to share a crazy story that happened to me last week. Around 1AM E.T. here in Miami - when my cell phone rang.

The dialog below is a fair reconstitution of the facts:

Me – Allo.
The Girl – hello
Me – who is this? Jenny?
The Girl – no. Who are you?
Me – allo. Is this a joke? Who is this?
The Girl – you don’t know me.
Me – Listen Lady, Its late, I’m tired and don’t have any time for this kind of BS
The Girl – Wait. Let me explain!! I don’t know who you are and you don’t know me but your number is not random it belongs to my husband.
Me – well obviously you dialed a wrong number as I AM NOT your husband.
The Girl – I know – my husband died in car crash last year. I keep hoping he will answer his phone. So I called!

BIG SILENCE

Me – I’m sorry for your loss. But I don’t see how I can help you.
The Girl – can you tell me your name?
Me – Florian
The Girl – can I call you Tim?

This is how much US carriers are spending in advertising to convince you to use their services. According to this study US carriers are spending over $4b per year on advertising. $10 Million per day to which we should add advertising budget of manufacturers like Motorola, Samsung, Nokia, LG, BlackBerry and Apple.

Advertising budget of mobile industry exceeds $10b per year in North America. I will not start to argue how those heavy dollars could change poverty in the world - although it could. But I will certainly argue on how wrong those carriers are to promote their services before upgrading their network.
US market is a third world market for Telecom experts. We still do not have 3G - except AT&T at a lousy speed and not everywhere. No MMS for Apple, mobile portals are old looking Wap sites, quality of service is poor, GSM coverage limited to large cities, range of devices on the market is nothing compare to Europe.
That also explains the large success of the iPhone in the US. It's like going from a 1967 VW Beetle to an Aston Martin DB9. American people are still amazed by services offered on the iPhone such as weather, stock and others.
France Telecom Mobile 10 years ago was providing such advanced services to its Itineris subscribers in France.

Here is how US carriers could spend their dollars wisely:

- Upgrade your network infrastructure.
- Give us better coverage, faster internet, more content, better pricing…

Out of the $300M you spend every month on advertising could you allocate 0.3% to charity please?

Don’t worry too much for your business US carriers – Telecom is a recession resistant industry in case you didn’t know!

It's wrong to buy your videos.

First of all they are going to get millions of wackos trying to kill themselves to produce the *best* video. Second because sharing IS NOT about money.

Sprint don't seem to understand anything in Social Media. Nada.

Do they actually have a CMO - Marketing officer?? Who came up with such a stupid idea?
They should open a channel on YouTube and simply ask people to send their videos there.
Public - you and me- would vote for the best video. No money involved, interesting content would received more viewers and everyone is happy.

Paying mass content is wrong.

If they want a state of art mobile video - they should ask Steven Spielberg or Georges Lucas and pay the price.
My friends at Qik.com must really laugh at Sprint now. They get hundreds of real time videos on their website and they don't even pay them a dime. In fact I'm pretty sure few users would pay for a premium service offering nice placement, high bandwidth and HD resolution.
Sprint is also wrong to use a SAMSUNG in their ad. SAMSUNG is to video what Sprint is to Telecom. A bad product based on a bad technology. CDMA...pffff

MMM aka Mobile Monday Miami

Last night I visited Nokia's new HQ in Miami. Beautiful work space next to Miami Intl Airport. Mobile Monday Miami was held there. About 50 attendees - all very interesting people looking for opportunities to develop business relations with local/regional Florida companies. Alex de Carvalho (@alexdc) hosted the show in a state of the art showroom. Unfortunately Nokia did not display any of new smartphone. Latest phone on display was a N95 :(

Back again with more of unleashed released of BlackBerry. 24.000 downloads of Beta OS. That's a lot. Well today I'm going to post new BlackBerry Desktop Manager Beta 4.5. Nothing much to what you already have to be honest. Except a nicer interface and at last a media manager for your photos and videos.

I have been using Blackberry for the last 5 years and I still think BB is the best mobile corporate solution for emails. Nonetheless RIM did not step into the smartphone business. The made a bad choice and are desperately trying to catch up. We all know they have an updated version of their OS. Lucky ones - like me- have had access to beta version since February.
In march I posted a 90 sec video on YouTube and to my surprise it drained 6000 viewers and 250 comments. WOW!

I never thought so many BB users were as frustrated as I was.

So now I decided to make a step forward and share my Beta versions with my friends.

Of course those are BETA versions. You are sole responsible for any damage to your device. Sorry for the disclaimer - we are in America :)

Instructions for updating your BlackBerry OS:

Make sure you have the latest version of Desktop Manager 4.3 installed.

Download the latest OS for your BlackBerry model to the PC then install it to the PC by running the file you downloaded.

Go to \Program Files\Common Files\Research in Motion\AppLoader and DELETE the Vendor.xml file.

Plug in your BlackBerry via USB and Open Desktop Manager. You should be prompted to upgrade.

Be patient, it can take more than an hour... Mine took nearly one hour.

DO NOT DISCONNECT THE DEVICE.

I worked hard to bring my company to where it is now. After a successful reverse merge last year we have now gone mass market. This first TV and Newspapers campaign is to alert consumer of alternatives to their actual cellphone provider. We - at Global Roaming- offer a better product than T-Mobile and ATT for travelers. You keep your local phone number, travel the world and pay about 90% less than with your actual carrier.

It was not simple to define an ad for us. Final result is very educational. I like it. For sure next round of ads will be more artistic.

Twitter is a conversation tool – I consider it to be a revolution. 140 characters long messages to say it all. No bullshit, no turning around. Just plain instant thinking.

I’m a big Twitter fan – that’s no news to you. 1200 followers, 4000 tweets, 700 direct messages…impressive you think. Well no!!

Some guys decided to break the rules –yeah…I know there are no rules. Anyway Jason Calacanis decided to be #1 tweeterer and offered a free mac book Air to reach 20.000 followers. Since then Twitter has turned into a racetrack. Schumacher aka Scoble was leading for many months, Barack Obama came in and broke all the figures with over 23K follower…and no ones give a shit…

Twitter is hijacked from its primary purpose. Here we go with EgoTwitter. Mine is bigger than yours 

So you can ask me the difference between my 1200 followers and that new guy who registered last week and already has 2000 followers- and the answer is: NETWORK. Like many-hopefully-we build a network over time creating an interesting noise; sharing tips; helping out. Like a relationship.But you can’t buy friends. Never worked!! Twitter is no exception.

Paul Walsh is launching a new venture and to drag new users- he uses that stupid trick: Buy the audience. It doesn’t look too good for a start- unless your business is boring… Sorry Paul !

I’m not against giving away prizes…or receiving prizes…in fact one idea will be to have a group contest where all prizes would be presented. Few mac book Air – Steve Jobs will be happy; cards; travels; phones; plasma…I think its called eBay

But here – if you want to break Twitter and get 40K followers you can do the following. Register @HugeBoobs, upload a picture of a nice blond with prominent 00 and start twittering of your loneliness; add every single user on public time line for 3 weeks and BINGO!!I can guarantee you’ll end up in top 10 users. No give-away – just grabbing the attention.

Moderation, no moderation THAT is the question! I followed Shel Israel’s interview of Twitter founders –BTW Shel was really good on this one; Loren Feldman really saved Shel he just doesn’t know it yet. Anyway - I saw a product manager giving numbers; stats; I hate that mostly in a conversation tool. Do you do statistics about your friends? How many time they called you today? Do you rank keywords in your conversation? That’s bull…

There are 2 kinds of usage. First one I’ll call it Broadcasting Mode. Fucking annoying. I un-followed Guy Kawazaki for this reason.200 tweets per day with hyperlink.Duh!! Have you heard about RSS feeds?? What are you trying to do? The worst usage someone can do of Twitter is definitely Broadcasting. At least if you think of getting into it be very specific in your profile and avoid: “prolific blogger avid for new conversation…”.

Second is called Conversation Mode. The only interesting one. Open text message platform making an incredible noise based on sharing; debating and creating content. Everyday I find interesting stories cool links helpful tips and meet incredible people. I selected 3 service providers found on Twitter. Just like that! Twitter is delivering 5% of its potential; we can do much better if we de-pollute our timeline.

I understand they have a business to run BUT they must understand Twitter is driven by its population – not the other way around. We decide what we want it to become. No one else! If I had the audience I would prove it by launching a strike. No tweets for 4 hours to stop few egocentric guys from using OUR tool as a self-promotion platform.

I may be naïve - you’re right I can hear you- everyone is promoting himself on Twitter. Ok ok…but let’s put some efforts into it. Start a conversation. Do not buy my friendship with a laptop or a GPS! Buy it with words; trust and confidence.

You can have no rules when there is an auto regulation – Wikipedia kind of. Twitter does not have it yet! I hope they’ll get it before it looses its momentum. This is the only place where I see a failure.

PS: 2 things I want to add. Don’t ask me for lists. Black list; white list is not my cup of tea. I’d rather change people than ban people. No one deserves to be put aside. Secondly I don’t like boycotts. Something I can’t and won’t do.

Telefonica to lower prices on data roaming

Spanish mobile giant Telefonica SA said it will reduce the price it charges customers to use mobile data services whilst travelling in Europe by more than 40 pct.

The company said its O2 and Movistar branded mobile businesses will implement the new roaming charges ahead of the summer holiday season. The reduced charges will cover data services and a cap of 0.32 euros on the cost of sending a text message from any EU country, which will apply to all customers from April.

The company is also introducing lower tariffs for business customers which typically use more data traffic, offering a flat monthly fee equating to 1 euro per megabyte of data downloaded.

O2 UK customers will save up to 80 pct on pre-pay data service bills, while post-pay customers on O2 contracts can look forward to a saving of almost 60 pct.

Mobile companies were forced to reduce roaming charges following EU regulation introduced in June last year to cap the cost of voice-calls.

The regulation did not include a cap on data service charges, but at the time national regulators were charged with monitoring the costs of text message and data communications services.

The European Commission will present a report to Parliament at the end of 2008 on the effects of the roaming caps and on the development of prices for text messaging and data roaming.

This is cut in prices is only for Europeans. When are we going to see something relevant for non Europeans?

Twitter, the microblog platform, is going to Japan, officially, and has received an undisclosed amount of investment (though small) from local investment firm Digital Garage, according to reports. The company has said previously that about 20 percent of its traffic comes from Japan, so this move to have local presence seems logical.
The service is supposed to be launched in Spring this year, the report says. Digital Garage is the incubator founded by investor Joi Ito, and has invested in Technorati Japan with Technorati. One of the market differences Twitter faces in Japan is that Japan does not use SMS on mobile phones..e-mail is used.

Here is a post we co-writted with my friend and business partner Pat Phelan.

Over the past few days we have seen lots of posts on the cost of running Twitter from such luminaries as Jason Calacanis, Paul Walsh, Marc Canter, Dave Winer , Fred Wilson and Allen Stern

Myself and my business partner Florian Seroussi both serious Twitter users have been knocking around figures for the past 24hrs and Florian had a Eureka moment today

“Never mind what Twitter Costs, what the cost of Twitter? ”

According to @missrogue and @fredericguarino there over 450.000 active users and 750.000 registered users on Twitter and with Twittown suggesting 340,000 accounts in July and a growth figure of 60,000 users per month you can settle on a rough 1 million users.

Jens Alfke over at Thought Palace suggested

“11,000 requests per second”

The figure that stands out to me is “…up to 11,000 requests per second”. Jesus Christ, that’s a lot. Where does that come from? Even assuming a million members who each post ten times a day, that’s only about 100 posts per second”

Some users like @Warzabidul say they are on Twitter 17 hours per day and with heavy users like Silicon Valley superstars Robert Scoble, Seesmic founder Loic Le Meur , New York Video superstar Loren Feldman and Vonage founder Jeff Pulver keeping an incredibly strong presence on the site we suggest that the average user spends at least one hour per day Twittering.

Our figures suggests 27M minutes per day about 450,000 hours/days around 13.5M hours month of non productivity due to our obsession.

At a growing pattern of doubling it sizes every 6 weeks, we can expect twitter to cost 30M hours per month of productivity.

Our estimates for 2008 suggest @ a minimum lost productivity cost of $20/hour this will represent $300M/month so $900M for first quarter, $600M per month for 2nd quarter so $1.8B, $1.2b per month for 3rd quarter so $3.6b and $2.4b/month for 4th quarter so $7.2b.

In total Twitter should cost economy around $13.5b in 2008!! Isn’t that FB value?

Update- We excluded the costs of sending and recieving SMS’s that are likely coming from/to a corporate phone’s.
